Sharing Grace and Dignity: Service and Second Chances in Towson

Philemon Ministry & Central Presbyterian Church Annual Community Clothing Drive

On Saturday, October 17, 2026, as the autumn morning cold signaled the inevitable turn toward winter, the men of Philemon Ministry (https://www.philemonministry.org/) traveled to Central Presbyterian Church (https://www.centralpc.org/) on York Road in Towson, Maryland, to assist with their annual community clothing drive. Inside the lobby and sanctuary, neatly arranged across folding tables, lay thousands of  clothing items—everything from infant onesies to heavy winter coats meant to shield neighbors against the season ahead. Arriving early to prepare the space, our men donned bright fluorescent vests and took up guide posts across the halls to ensure families could navigate the space with ease and order.

There is a feeling of thankfulness connected with helping a person search for a winter coat when the cold months threaten to be unforgiving. As neighbors arrived—some seeking just an item or two, others gathering winter essentials for entire households—the air filled with the quiet warmth of community fellowship. Over fresh omelets, bagels, and hot coffee, accompanied by live acoustic music that offered a gentle respite from the busyness of life, the line between volunteer and guest seemed to soften into something far more meaningful.

"When a man who once needed help discovers the purpose that comes from serving others, he isn't just staying out of trouble—he is coming home for good."

True service does not abandon a room when the crowds disperse; it follows through from beginning to end. As the event drew to a close, the men of Philemon consolidated remaining garments, packed away heavy tables, and entered the sanctuary to carefully reset the movable chairs for Sunday morning worship. Volunteers from Central Presbyterian noted how swiftly and seamlessly the space was restored, a testament to the pillar of Meaningful Acts of Service that guides our reentry community. When a man who once needed help discovers the purpose that comes from serving others, he isn't just re-entering society—he is coming home for good.

Reflection Question: When was the last time you saw a simple act of service transform a vast room into a place of sanctuary?
