Home 4 Good - Providing Work - Helping Others

Clearing the Clutter, Building the Brotherhood

On a cool Saturday morning, eight men from Philemon House traded sleep for socket wrenches and showed up at the Home 4 Good shop with a simple job in front of them: clean it out. Tools had piled up. Lawn equipment had lost its order. What could charitably be called "junk" had quietly taken over the corners of a workspace meant to help men build a future.

But a closer look revealed something being restored that had nothing to do with tools. Doug, Fernando, James, Nick B, Nick Y, Bruce, Wactor, and Rusty spent the morning sorting dozens of tools, rearranging mowing and maintenance equipment, and loading trailers with what no longer belonged. Fernando, one of the newest residents at Philemon House, took on the job of testing a dozen vacuum cleaners for usability — a small task, but one that asked him to show up, pay attention, and take ownership of something bigger than himself.

That is the quiet work of reentry. Long before a man rebuilds his life, he often has to practice showing up for something small and doing it well.

"The shop is actually a part of Home 4 Good (H4G) Landscaping and clean out business. The H4G is a for profit business that is connected to Philemon and can provide work if we're having problems finding a job. The cleanup at the shop was to declutter, sweep out, and consolidate. We spent about two and a half hours there and got a lot of things done. It looks a lot better and things will be easier to find and now we can park the lawn equipment back in the shop again."

— Doug, Philemon House Resident

A clean shop means a working shop. A working shop means men returning from incarceration have somewhere to earn a paycheck when the job search gets hard. And a Saturday morning spent shoulder to shoulder, sweating over sawdust and old equipment, is where brotherhood gets built — not in the big moments, but in the ordinary ones men choose to share.

At Philemon Ministry, we believe successful reentry is about more than finding employment, securing housing, and staying out of trouble. It is about becoming the kind of man who recognizes that his life has purpose — and that part of that purpose is serving others. That is what Meaningful Acts of Service, one of our Four Pillars, looks like in practice: men who could have spent a Saturday morning resting instead chose to give it away, so that Home 4 Good could keep opening doors for the next man who needs employment and a second chance.

Help us continue building a community where men don't simply receive a second chance — they use that second chance to become a blessing to others.
